One step

I look around at the small bleak downtown. The cool dry air rushes to my face and carries the smell of Chinese and cigarettes with just a hint of stale beer. Music pumps from the gay bars and taverns meeting in the middle and begin to dance to their own mix in the air around me, the drunken laughter and clomping of heals on the cobble road add even more of a unique sound and style to the simple calm Thursday night.
I spot my car and keep my pace.. but my mind doesn't seem to have one. My mind is like a run away train, you never know where it's going or where it's gonna stop. But at this point I know where it's at, it's back there in that store. I couldn't forget his face if I tried, but I wouldn't be able to even describe it to you even if I wanted to. It's one of those, he's one of those.
Standing next to the drivers side door I begin to ransack through my purse in search for the jingle of too much metal. As I feel them, my body pulses and my attention is turned back to that little store. My mind goes blank and I have no actual thought.
One step
Two step
My hand wraps around the cold metal handle and I pull the door open sounding the bell to announce my return.
He looks at me, "I thought you had to be home?"
"I do, but I forgot.. come here"
Giving me a look he gets down from the counter hes sitting on and begins to slowly wonder my direction.
"why do I have to walk all the way over here, wha'd you forget?"
He's getting closer and I just smile and start walking to meet him faster. There's only a mere foot between us, I grab his shirt and pull him closer and look him straight in the eyes. I can't feel anything except my heart pounding..
harder
harder
harder
As soon as our lips touch, the walls fall down, the floor doesn't exist. His fingertips touch my cheek very slightly, and his other hand lands on the arch of my back, he holds me. The kiss seems to last forever but I know it was only a few seconds. He releases me and I walk slowly backwards, not one word is said, but his expression says everything. I just send him a smile and turn just as I push the door open behind me with the bell once again sounding but this time to anounce my departure.
I meet the stairs once more

...reality
I'm back standing next to my car with the jingle of too much metal held in my hand and I'm just starring at the little shop. I put my key into the door.

close
I start up the engine as it roars on the lights beam out, I dig for my cigarettes and spark the flame to ignite the chemical creation. My heart still pounding, I pull out from my parking spot and cruise down the road. As I drive past the shop there he is, sitting on the counter top. I keep my car straight and head home.
I missed my chance, and I'm gonna be late for curfew.
